Data Searches

Data Search Services

Data search services involve searching for data, datasets, and databases, and associated metadata, using comprehensive online strategies and tools.

You may need the data for a particular research project, or as a background to preparing a research proposal.

Earth Research searches directories, data repositories, databases, and metadata sources to locate and retrieve data of interest. We can conduct various searches from very specific to very general in nature, and for digital and analog data sets.

Examples of data

Data that can be searched for and retrieved include geographic/spatial/GIS data; remotely-sensed data; maps; data for atmospheric and marine variables; data for terrestrial and geological variables; and data for social, economic, and political variables.

In fact, Earth Research can search for just about any type of data and data source.

What do you get?

You receive the data themselves if they are able to be freely accessed and downloaded from the data repositories.

If the data are not publicly accessible, you are provided with details about the data sources, the properties of the data (e.g., type, format, quality) from which you can assess the suitability of the data for your research, and an estimate of costs associated with potential data access and retrieval.

How do you benefit?

The data search service enables you to obtain the existing datasets of relevance to your research. It is vital that you are aware of all existing data sets so that you do not put effort into generating data that already exist.
